A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
