This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to make up for time.
This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
